QED quantum electrodynamic vacuum

“What I am going to tell you about is what we teach our physics students in the third or fourth year of graduate school... It is my task to convince you not to turn away because you don't understand it. You see my physics students don't understand it... That is because I don't understand it. Nobody does.” [Richard Feynman; QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter]

The quantum electrodynamic vacuum or QED vacuum is the field-theoretic vacuum of quantum electrodynamics. It is the lowest energy state (the ground state) of the electromagnetic field when the fields are quantized. When Planck's constant is hypothetically allowed to approach zero, QED vacuum is converted to classical vacuum, which is to say, the vacuum of classical electromagnetism.

Another field-theoretic vacuum is the QCD vacuum of the Standard Model. Wikipedia, QED

Richard Feynman helped explain how light and matter affect one another. He built a theory called quantum electrodynamics also known as QED. This theory shows how charged particles such as electrons interact by sending tiny packets of light energy called photons back and forth.
QED describes these interactions with great detail. When an electron moves or changes direction it can exchange a photon with another particle. This exchange controls how particles attract or repel each other. The idea shows that even empty space is full of tiny events that guide the movement of matter.
Feynman wanted people to understand these ideas without heavy math. To do this he created simple drawings known as Feynman diagrams. Each diagram shows how particles move split or meet. The lines and points give a clear picture of how photons carry energy between electrons.
These diagrams help explain everyday effects. Reflection happens when photons bounce off electrons in a surface. Absorption happens when a photon gives its energy to an electron. QED shows that these simple events are the result of many tiny interactions at high speed.
Feynmans work changed how physics is taught and understood. It gave scientists and students a tool to see the unseen. QED remains one of the most accurate theories in science. It explains light matter and energy at the smallest scales and reveals how simple rules shape the world around us.
