Enneagram

Enneagram

Ennead - Group of nine; any of several groups or cycles of nine gods that were considered to be associated in the mythology and religion of ancient Egypt. (source unknown)

An enneagram, or nine-pointed star. This enneagram is not drawn in one continous line but as three triangles on top of one another. It is used in Christian symbolism to indicate the nine gifts of the spirit: love, happiness, peace, patience, leniency, benevolence, loyalty, humbleness, and temperance. See in Group 23, also called an enneagram. Inscribed in a triangle is the symbol for the revived Order of the Temple Knights, which has lodges in all Scandinavian countries. In their symbol, however, is plaited. See in Group 28 for facts about the medieval Order of the Temple Knights. (source unknown)

The enneagram, "nine-graph", a symbol denoting the essence of being in Cabbalistic mysticism. Through its womb-like form and the number nine it is associated with the conception and foetal development of new human beings. With the circle closed this ideogram has been used as a symbol for the esoteric philosophy of Gourdieff. Enneagram is also the name of the different structure, used in Christian symbolism. See that sign in Group 27 for more data. (source unknown)

Enneagram

"It must be understood that the enneagram is a universal symbol. All knowledge can be included in the enneagram and with the help of the enneagram it can be interpreted. And in this connection only what a man is able to put into the enneagram does he actually know, that is, understand. What he cannot put into the enneagram he does not understand. For the man who is able to make use of it, the enneagram makes books and libraries entirely unnecessary. Everything can be included and read in the enneagram. A man may be quite alone in the desert and he can trace the enneagram in the sand and in it read the eternal laws of the Universe. And every time he can learn something new, something he did not know before.
The enneagram is perpetual motion, the same perpetual motion that men have sought since the remotest antiquity and could never find. And it is clear why they could not find perpetual motion. They sought outside themselves that which was within them; and they attempted to construct perpetual motion as a machine is constructed, whereas real perpetual motion is a part of another perpetual motion and cannot be created apart from it.
The enneagram is a schematic diagram of perpetual motion, that is, of a machine of eternal movement. But of course, it is necessary to know how to read this diagram. The understanding of this symbol and the ability to make use of it give man very great power. It is perpetual motion and it is also the philosopher's stone of the alchemists.
The knowledge of the enneagram has for a very long time been preserved in secret and if it now is, so to speak, made available to all, it is only in an incomplete and theoretical form.
In order to understand the enneagram it must be thought of as in motion, as moving. A motionless enneagram is a dead symbol; the living symbol is in motion.
It is possible to experience the enneagram by movement. The rhythm itself of these movements would suggest the necessary ideas and maintain the necessary tension; without them it is not possible to feel what is most important."

In Search of the Miraculous
Ouspensky

"All parts of this system are connected together in the right order to form an organic whole - a living organism. Man and the Universe are taken together. The teaching about Man is related to the Universe, whose child he is, and what exists in him is shown to exist in the Universe. The significance of evolving Man and the significance of the evolving Universe, and the laws in Man and in the Universe are taken together as inseparable.
In speaking of the enneagram, G said that it formulated the whole of the teaching and that the more a man could read its meanings the more deeply he understood the Work. On one occasion, asked what it was all about, G said that it represents the union of the Law of Three, or the Law of the Trinity, and the Law of Seven, or Law of the Octave. Let us remind ourselves that the Law of Three states that in every manifestation three forces, active, passive and neutralising, must take part, and that they are the creative forces which create the different orders of the worlds in descending scale, increasing the number of laws as they duplicate themselves.
The Law of Seven relates to the order of manifestation. If there be a creative force there must also be order in creation, or all will be chaos. The interaction of these two laws in such a way that one does not hinder or stifle the other, and so that all possibilities are attained, is represented in the Enneagram."
