THE PATIENT KEELY.

We recall in the history of American inventive industry no example of patience, steady persistence, and ever-reviving hope after repeated disappointment so impressive as that which is exhibited in the case of Keely and his motor. Once more he is confident that success is near at hand. Once more he announces that his practical engine will be completed and in operation a week or two hence. Is this the twentieth or the hundredth time that he has been cheered by the signs of approaching victory? And is he not doomed again to disappointment?
The history of this persevering man and his new but very obscure force indicates that he will fail in 1895, as he has failed so many times in so many years past. But we are confident that this approaching failure will not discourage him. He will keep on plodding so long as kind, credulous, and opulent friends provide generously for his wants.
How fortunate Keely has been in the substantial support of his friends! Old age is now creeping upon him, and we can scarcely expect that he will tame his strange force in the years of his life now remaining, but when the long struggle is ended we shall at least have an instructive and affecting picture of the devotion of friendly capitalists to the interests of a patient inventor. The motor will at least have given so much to mankind. As Mr. Keely is growing old, we suggest to him that he should now accept the proffered help of experts. Many of them are ready, willing, and even anxious to assist him. Why shouldn't he accept an annuity and turn them loose in his workshop?
