The ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata, describes devastating weapons of the gods, such as the Brahmastra. The text describes it as a single projectile "charged with all the power of the universe," causing an "incandescent column of smoke and flame as bright as ten thousand suns." The effects described-searing heat, poisoned water, people's hair and nails falling out-are eerily similar to the effects of modern nuclear weapons.
