Antonie van Leeuwenhoek

In 1676, a cloth merchant from Delft sent a letter to the Royal Society of London describing something almost no one believed: thousands of tiny living creatures, swimming and moving, inside a single drop of ordinary pond water.
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek had no university education and no scientific training. What he had was patience, and a self-taught skill for grinding glass lenses more precise than anything the era's professional instrument makers could produce, some capable of magnifying up to 270 times. The Royal Society was skeptical enough to send its own observers to repeat his experiments before accepting his results.
He was right. Van Leeuwenhoek went on to be among the first to observe bacteria and blood cells, laying groundwork for microbiology more than a century before germ theory existed. In 1680, the society that once doubted him elected him a Fellow, the same honor held by Isaac Newton.
